Why kindergarten educator jobs in Germany are in such high demand

Since 2013 every child over one year old has a legal entitlement to a daycare place, and from August 2026 that right extends to primary-school-age children for after-school care (Ganztagsanspruch). Cities simply cannot hire fast enough. What counts as an Erzieher in Germany

The protected job title is staatlich anerkannte(r) Erzieher(in) — a state-recognised educator. This is a full Fachkraft (skilled specialist), not an assistant role. In Germany the qualification is earned through a two-to-five-year vocational programme at a Fachschule für Sozialpädagogik, usually combining theory with supervised practical placements.

A few things to understand before you apply:

• Erzieher is a broad profession. Recognised educators work not only in Kitas but also in after-school Horte, youth homes and disability services.
• Kinderpfleger/Sozialassistent is a lower tier. If your training is shorter, you may be recognised as an assistant rather than a full Erzieher — the pay and responsibilities differ.
• Your foreign childcare or teaching diploma may map onto Erzieher, but only the recognition authority can confirm this. Early-childhood-education degrees often qualify.

Getting your qualification recognised (Anerkennung)

Unlike doctors or nurses, Erzieher recognition is decided at the state (Bundesland) level, not nationally — each of the 16 states has its own Anerkennungsstelle, usually inside the Kultusministerium, Landesjugendamt or Regierungspräsidium. Apply in the state where you intend to work, because a recognition granted in Bavaria is not automatically valid in Berlin.

The typical process looks like this:

• Gather your file: diploma, full transcript of subjects and hours, proof of practical placements, CV, passport, and certified German translations by a sworn translator (vereidigter Übersetzer).

The B2 language requirement

You will almost always need German at B2 level (CEFR) to be recognised and hired, because the job is built on daily communication with children, parents and colleagues. Some states accept B1 for the assistant tier, but B2 is the realistic target. A Goethe-Zentrum, telc or ÖSD certificate is the standard proof, and employers frequently ask for it in the interview.

Visa routes into an Erzieher job

Because Erzieher is a regulated profession, your visa is tied to recognition. The two main routes are:

• §16d Recognition visa (Anerkennungspartnerschaft). This is the classic path: you enter Germany specifically to complete your Anpassungsmaßnahmen and gain full recognition. What you will earn: TVöD SuE salaries in 2026

Most Kitas run by cities and non-profits pay under the TVöD SuE (Tarifvertrag Sozial- und Erziehungsdienst). A fully recognised Erzieher is normally graded S 8a, with pay rising by Stufe (experience step):

• Entry (Stufe 1–2): roughly €3,300–€3,600 gross per month.
• Mid-career (Stufe 3–4): around €3,800–€4,100 gross.

Group and facility leaders (S 9 to S 18) earn considerably more.
